I shop at Target at least three times a week. Not because I need to - because I love it. And after years of walking those aisles, I've figured out exactly how Target's pricing, clearance, and markdown system works. These aren't generic tips you'll find in a listicle - this is the real playbook.
The Target Clearance Schedule
Target follows a predictable markdown schedule. Once you learn it, you can time your visits to catch the deepest discounts.
How Markdowns Work
Target marks down items in stages. The first markdown is usually 30% off, then 50%, then 70%, and finally 90% before the item gets pulled from shelves entirely. The trick is knowing when these markdowns happen.
The weekly markdown schedule by department:
- Monday: Electronics, accessories, kids' clothing
- Tuesday: Domestics (bedding, bath), women's clothing, pets
- Wednesday: Men's clothing, health & beauty, diapers
- Thursday: Housewares, lingerie, shoes, toys
- Friday: Cosmetics, automotive, hardware
These aren't exact every single week - individual stores have some flexibility - but it's consistent enough that I plan my visits around it.
Reading the Price Tag
This is the single most important tip. Target's clearance tags have a code that tells you exactly how much further the price will drop.
Look at the small number in the top-right corner of the clearance sticker. If it ends in:
- 4 -> This is the first markdown. It will likely go lower.
- 8 -> This is the final markdown. This is the lowest price it will be.
So if you see a clearance sticker ending in 4 at 30% off, you can wait for it to hit 50-70% off. But if it ends in 8 - grab it now or lose it.
The Target Circle App
The Target Circle app is non-negotiable if you shop at Target. Here's what most people miss:
Stacking Deals
You can stack Target Circle offers with manufacturer coupons AND a RedCard discount. That's three discounts on the same item. I regularly save 40-50% on beauty products this way.
The "Wallet" Offers
Open the app before you shop and scroll through the personalized offers in your Wallet. These are targeted to your shopping history, and they refresh regularly. I've seen offers like $5 off a $20 beauty purchase that don't appear in the weekly ad.
Birthday Reward
Register your birthday in the app for a 5% off everything coupon during your birthday month. Stack it with other offers.
Best Times to Shop
The Golden Hours
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings between 8-10 AM are the sweet spot. Markdowns from the overnight team are freshly posted, the shelves have been restocked, and the store isn't crowded. This is when I find 90% of my best deals.
Sunday evenings (7-9 PM) are also great - this is when stores start clearing out weekend stock and you can catch items that were just marked down for the new week.
Worst Times
Saturday afternoons - the store is packed, clearance sections are picked over, and the team is too busy to put out new markdowns. Skip it.
Where to Find Hidden Deals
The End Caps
The endcaps (displays at the end of each aisle) rotate frequently and often have unadvertised deals. Pay special attention to end caps near the back of the store - they get less foot traffic, so deals sit longer.
The Bullseye Section (Dollar Spot)
The Bullseye's Playground near the entrance has $1-$5 items that are genuinely great. But the real strategy is to check this section on markdown days - I've gotten $5 items for $1.25 on a regular basis.
The Beauty Section Hidden Shelves
In the beauty department, look at the bottom shelves and the sections near the pharmacy. This is where Target puts beauty clearance that doesn't fit on the main endcap. I've found full-size prestige haircare products for 70% off hiding on these shelves.
The Back Corner Clearance Racks
Every Target has a clearance section, but the best stuff is on the racks tucked in the back corners of the clothing sections. The main clearance endcap gets picked over fast - the back racks don't.
Seasonal Timing
When to Buy What
- January: Holiday decor (90% off), winter clothing clearance, fitness equipment deals
- February: Valentine's candy and gifts (50-90% off after the 15th)
- March-April: Winter clearance finale, Easter deals
- May: Spring items start marking down, Mother's Day gift clearance
- June-July: Summer items peak then start marking down, swimwear clearance
- August: Back-to-school peak, summer clearance (70-90% off)
- September: School supplies clearance, fall items arrive
- October: Halloween decor and costumes (wait until Nov 1 for 50-90% off)
- November-December: Black Friday deals, but also check clearance throughout the month
The "Post-Holiday" Windows
The three best clearance windows at Target are: the week after Christmas, the week after Valentine's Day, and the week after Easter. I stock up on seasonal items for next year at 90% off.
My Target Shopping Checklist
Before every Target trip, I:
- Open the Target Circle app and save all relevant offers
- Check the weekly ad for any price-match opportunities
- Know which departments are marking down that day
- Start in clearance sections, then move to my list
- Scan items with the Target app to check for hidden Circle offers
- Always check endcaps and bottom shelves
- Use my RedCard for the automatic 5% off
The RedCard Advantage
If you shop at Target regularly and don't have a RedCard, you're leaving money on the table. The debit version links to your checking account (no credit check) and gives you 5% off every purchase plus free shipping online. That 5% stacks on top of clearance prices and Circle offers.
Over the past year, my RedCard has saved me over $600 - and I wasn't trying to optimize for it. It just happens automatically.
The Bottom Line
Target deal-finding isn't about clipping coupons or waiting for sales. It's about understanding the system - when markdowns happen, how to read the tags, where the hidden clearance lives, and how to stack discounts. Once you internalize this rhythm, you'll never pay full price at Target again.
