I have a confession: about 80% of my beauty routine is drugstore products. Not because I can't afford the fancy stuff - because the drugstore stuff is genuinely better for my needs. The beauty industry has caught up, and some of the best formulas on the market are sitting on a CVS shelf for under $20.
Here are my tried-and-tested drugstore picks across skincare, makeup, and haircare. Everything here is under $20 and available at Target, Walmart, CVS, or Walgreens.
Skincare
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream - $16
The dermatologist-recommended moisturizer that lives up to the hype. The ceramides actually repair your moisture barrier, and the formula is thick enough for dry skin without feeling greasy. I use the tub version for my body and face. If you buy one skincare product, make it this one.
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5 - $17
This is my secret weapon for irritated, dry, or post-procedure skin. It calms everything down overnight. I put it on over my moisturizer when my skin is acting up, and by morning the irritation is gone. A tube lasts months because you need so little.
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel - $19
Lightweight, water-based hydration that layers beautifully under makeup. If CeraVe feels too heavy for you (especially in summer), this is the move. The hyaluronic acid plumps the skin without clogging pores.
The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% - $6
At $6, this is the best value in skincare. Niacinamide minimizes pores, controls oil, and evens skin tone. I use it morning and night. The Ordinary's whole line is worth exploring - dermatologist-grade ingredients at drugstore prices.
Makeup
Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara - $11
This went viral for a reason. The wand separates every lash, and the formula builds without clumping. I've tried mascaras that cost $30+ and keep coming back to this one. The waterproof version is even better.
NYX Professional Makeup Butter Gloss - $5
Buttery smooth, not sticky, and the shade range is incredible. "Tiramisu" and "Madeline" are the perfect everyday nudes. At $5, I own six shades and have no regrets.
e.l.f. Camo CC Cream - $14
SPF 30, light-to-medium coverage, and it actually matches deeper skin tones. This is my everyday base - I skip foundation entirely in favor of this. It evens out my skin without looking cakey, and the SPF means one less step.
Milani Baked Blush in "Luminoso" - $9
A warm peach-coral with a subtle golden shimmer. It looks beautiful on medium to deep skin tones and gives that healthy, sun-kissed glow. The baked formula means it lasts all day.
L'Oreal Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation - $16
If you need more coverage than a CC cream, this is the one. It's truly long-wearing (I've tested it through Houston summers) and the shade range for deeper skin tones is better than most. Sat on my skin for 12 hours without separating.
Haircare
Mielle Organics Rosemary Mint Strengthening Shampoo - $10
Already mentioned this in my 4C hair guide, but it deserves a spot here too. It cleanses without stripping, smells incredible, and my hair genuinely feels stronger after consistent use. The TikTok fame is earned.
Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist - $4
Four dollars for a deep conditioner this good is almost unfair. The slip is incredible for detangling, and it works well as a co-wash too. I always have a backup bottle.
Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Defining Cream - $9
If you have wavy or curly hair, this cream defines without crunch. It's lightweight enough for finer curls but moisturizing enough for thicker textures. The scent is subtle and pleasant.
Tools & Extras
Real Techniques Sponge - $6
The original beauty blender alternative that honestly performs just as well. I replace mine monthly and at $6 each (often on sale for less), it's a no-brainer. Buy the multi-pack for even better value.
Aquaphor Healing Ointment - $7
The ultimate multi-purpose product. I use it on lips, cuticles, dry patches, and as a slugging balm at night. A tube lasts forever. Every beauty editor I know has one in their bag.
How to Save Even More
A few tricks for getting these products for less:
- Target Circle + Manufacturer Coupons: Stack them for 30-40% off beauty
- CVS ExtraBucks: CVS regularly offers $5 ExtraBucks on $15 beauty purchases
- Walgreens Points: Build up myWalgreens points on beauty purchases for future discounts
- Buy the multi-packs: Most of these products come in value sizes or multi-packs that drop the per-unit cost significantly
The Bottom Line
You don't need a Sephora budget to have a great beauty routine. These drugstore products perform at the same level - and in some cases better - than their high-end counterparts. I've tested them all personally, and they've earned their permanent spots in my routine.
